Wirral YMCA is based on Whetstone Lane in Birkenhead, providing a range of services to the local community including supported accommodation, night shelter, training courses and conference spaces.

The night shelter provides a safe warm place to stay for those sleeping rough on the streets around the Birkenhead area. The YMCA is able to house up to 15 men and 5 women, although on the coldest nights of the year they will take as many people as possible. This is continued during the Christmas period in which they open the centre 24 hours a day to allow people to come into the warmth, enjoy a hot meal and a present.

Two of our employees recently visited YMCA Wirral to see first hand the amazing work done by the staff and volunteers. Business Development Manager, James Jordan, and Digital Marketing Executive, Amy Peebles met with Executive Director of Wirral YMCA, Nigel Hughes.

Nigel explained how the money pledged would be of vital importance to the centre and the night shelter programme; over the last 12 months it has provided 4869 bed spaces to 377 people. During their visit, our staff were given the opportunity to see the entire YMCA building and the amazing opportunities offered to those staying in the building such as the community garden and craft activities organised each week.

They even spoke to residents staying in the supported accommodation and heard how much the YMCA has improved their quality of life and allowed some a fresh start in life, one gentleman was in the middle of packing up his room, ready to move into private accommodation – he said: “had it not been for the YMCA he wouldn’t be where he was today”.
